Nevirapine is a drug used with other HIV medications to help control infection from HIV. They also help reduce the amount of HIV present in the body so that the immune system is in the body can work better. Nevirapine drug use may reduce the risk of HIV complications (such as new infections, cancer) and also improve the quality of life.
Nevirapine belongs to a class of drugs known as non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). However, Nevirapine is not a cure for HIV infection but only reduce the risk of spreading HIV disease to others.
Nevirapine should not be used to prevent HIV infection after accidental exposure (such as syringes, blood / body fluid contact). In contrast to HIV drugs are used to prevent infection after exposure.
Nevirapine is taking medicine with or without food, usually once daily during the first 14 days when you begin treatment, then twice a day or as directed by a physician. If there are problems liver or skin (allergic reactions) when you take this medicine once a day, immediately consult a doctor and do not increase the dose to twice a day.
If you use a liquid suspension form of this medication, shake the bottle first and be careful in measuring the dose by using a special measuring or spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.
